I would not attempt without somewhat lightweight gear, as 40+lbs on my back while biking does not sound fun, i have an under 10lb (tarp, sleeping bag, pad, and essentials.) overnight kit (30f or warmer) that would do fine in just a back pack with the sleeping bag on the bars or even in the pack. I developing a new area of wilderness for rock climbing but its about 9 miles from the nearest parking lot. Just wanted to get these out before the summer trips start. As others have mentioned, it all depends on how your packing. We only pack 4 5 days worth of clothing and hand wash often. We also don pack large amounts of toiletries and consumables because we can usually purchase them just about anywhere we go.anti theft backpack

The soft shell is made to repel most of the wind and some light precipitation. A fleece over top of it won really be doing much. Bummer.
